A beauty of the southern sky, it was named the Jewel Box by Sir John Herschel after seeing it with his telescope whilst observing from Cape of Good Hope in South Africa in 1833.

It was discovered by Abbe Lacaille during a trip to South Africa in 1751-1752. Located just 1o from Beta Crucis in the Southern Cross, at 14 million years of age, it is one of the youngest clusters known.

Its distance is calculated at 6491 light years, but that is difficult due to obscuration by the dust of the CoalSack Nebula. The three brightest stars are blue giants and shine at magnitudes 5.7, 5.9 and 6.8 respectively. The fourth is kappa Crucis a red super giant and shines at magnitude 7.5 that contrast its members.
